Design, Development, Content Management System
For 25 years, Science Friday has made science fun and engaging for listeners of all ages. The program has become much more than a weekly radio show — Science Friday has evolved into a source for innovative multimedia content. Bluecadet created a website that showcases Science Friday’s robust offerings and reflects the show’s vibrant and creative personality.
An Innovative Approach to Audio
Audio remains at the core of what Science Friday does. We developed an integrated audio player that allows visitors to dig deeply into the website’s content while also having an uninterrupted listening experience.
Curating Creative Content
The website also showcases Science Friday’s collection of video and written content, as well as its impressive collection of STEM education resources. Using the WordPress CMS, Science Friday content authors can group and cross-reference content by type, topic, and theme while maintaining an organized and engaging look and feel.
Custom iconography and color-coding allow users to easily understand what type of content they are looking at (Segment, Article, Video, or Educational Resource). Users can explore content by topic (Biology, Ethics & Policy, Space, etc.) or by curated “spotlights.” These spotlights are collections of content grouped by themes ranging from “Hollywood Science” to “The Hunt for Dark Matter” to “Cephalopod Week.”
Showcasing Educational Resources
Previously the educational resources produced by the Science Friday team were a hidden gem. The new site gives the educational activities, guides, and games the prominent attention they deserve. The Educate section allows users to sort content by grade level, activity duration, and subject. This sorting functionality allows teachers and informal educators to easily find content that supports them in the classroom or at home. Each resource links to related content on other parts of the site and provides additional worksheets and guides in an “Educator’s Toolbox.”
Easy and Flexible Site Management
The new system of categorization makes for a simple and easy-to-navigate user interface. The new approach to the website’s backend organization allows the Science Friday team flexibility in updating and maintaining a fresh and dynamic site. This flexibility is especially important for the homepage. The new homepage accommodates the different content requirements of the different days of the week.
The new website puts engaging imagery and video at the forefront, enticing users to explore the content more deeply. The new site is also fully responsive, ensuring a beautiful experience on mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.
To ensure the site can perform under high traffic and scale to meet demand, the site runs on Pantheon’s hosting platform. Read the Pantheon case study >>
