An innovative collaboration between the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Bluecadet, the Beyond the Paint exhibition showcased three decades of groundbreaking mural artistry while positioning the Mural Arts Program within the broader context of socially engaged art practices.
Bluecadet was involved with the project from concept to completion, starting with the thematic framework and ending with the floorplan and graphics. On view at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from November 2013 through April 2014, the exhibition was designed to tell a complex story about the power of art to create community: art-making as a social practice, as an educational tool, and as a way to help heal and transform lives.
Having produced thousands of murals over the last three decades, the Mural Arts Program has literally changed the face of Philadelphia. This exhibition was a chance to share this compelling story with the public, celebrating the successes of the program and its participants. Part celebration, part showcase, and part retrospective, Beyond the Paint honored the influence of Mural Arts and encouraged ongoing support as the program continues to evolve.
A Colorful Style, A Collaborative Effort
We designed a bold, colorful graphic style that references the flat geometric look of vintage hand-painted signs. The environmental graphic treatment does to the gallery what the Mural Arts program has done to the city: through an explosion of color, the space was transformed into a vivid, expressive place reflecting Philly’s rich cultural diversity. A “mural studio” was included within the space, featuring content about the process of mural painting, as well as installations by artists and artist collectives working with the Mural Arts Program.
Beyond the Paint was truly a collaborative effort, with multiple voices, stakeholders, and participants coming together to create a rich, meaningful, and memorable visitor experience.
