Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago
The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) is known for its rich history of fresh exhibitions and programming, a celebration of multidisciplinary artists, and a dedication to its home city.
When the museum embarked on a website renovation, they tasked Bluecadet with translating an ambitious, multifaceted vision.

Blending MCA’s bold personality with effortless usability
Preserving key hallmarks of MCA’s brand was essential to this project. Bluecadet leveraged the museum’s iconic architecture and brand elements found onsite and in print, and reinterpreted them in surprising, but functional features for the web experience.
Bluecadet reimagined MCA’s signature grid motif, the visual of a ticker tape, gradient styling, and more, and threaded them consistently throughout the site. The result was a cohesive web experience that aesthetically bridged the onsite and online visitor experience.

An integrated collection experience with intuitive search, dynamic recirculation options, and fresh ways to showcase artists and their works
The MCA’s collections and featured artists are at the core of the museum, and by extension, the website. To that end, developing intuitive and integrated collection exploration was a top priority. As part of that, Bluecadet developed a revamped collection search tool (“Collection Explorer”) with more robust search and filtering features, allowing for a new level of browsing.

Bluecadet enhanced the site’s collection discoverability, bringing artworks and artists to life in fresh, dynamic ways. The new “Art and Artists” page puts creators and their works at center stage, offering curated connections that spark unexpected juxtapositions and fresh discoveries. Visitors can dive deeper by following their own path, exploring related pieces directly from object pages, transforming each visit into a journey of exploration and surprise.

New storytelling formats that elevate their celebrated exhibition history—captured through immersive photography and video
The scope of MCA’s exhibitions required a dynamic and user-centered approach to storytelling and content strategy. Bluecadet developed flexible editorial templates that enabled the museum’s team to enrich their stories with bold media (including exhibition photography and video) and improve the reader experience, through features such as enhanced spacing and motion.
